Helping your children cope with divorce

On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2022 | Divorce

Divorce is a challenging time for everyone in the family. During a time when everything is changing, your children will look for help to navigate the process.

As you are going through a divorce, you will likely find yourself having difficulty knowing how to cope with the change, much less how to support your children.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you and your children discover how to cope with divorce.

Patience is key

Regardless of who asked for the divorce, it can be easy to get frustrated both with the process and the emotions. Going through a divorce will require you to be patient with yourself and your children.

When you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, you may need to ask for support from a loved one. Time to care for yourself can help you be more patient when trying to support your children.

Similarly, your children will also have moments when they do not know how to handle the process. These are the moments when you need to ask them how you can support them.

Opportunities to talk

Your children will have a lot of different feelings during the divorce process. They must know they can ask questions and get appropriate answers.

While some aspects of your divorce may not be appropriate for younger children, it is still essential to give them opportunities to ask questions. These questions are an excellent opportunity to learn their thoughts and concerns about the divorce. It also gives you a chance to connect with them about the parts of the divorce that worry them the most.

Children tend to be resilient through all kinds of challenging situations. It is essential to let them know that they have your support during the process.

Seek help from professionals

While you will likely do anything you can to help your children through this, sometimes it helps to lean on professionals.  Giordano Law has a vast network of child and family therapists that can work with your children to help them process their feelings and assist them with the changes occurring in the family.
